Subject: upgrade or reinstall ?

I read the upgrade instruction at upgrade page: http://www.dokuwiki.org/install:upgrade where it asks to replace all the files with the new files. Will it not remove the registered-users data and other information, as it is overwriting all the directories ?

I have lots of Wiki pages and registers users and I don't want to loose them. The current Wiki is 1 year old (version 2008-05-05). I wanted to upgrade. So how can I keep the data while getting a new version ?

In case of doubt => backup (well, in fact it's always a good idea to backup stuff before upgrading).
