However, if there is no way to have what I wanted, I'll happily move my main stuff to another animal.
I think that's your best option.

ach wroteWhy [can't you use a virtual host setup]?
Since this isn't a public website, just a local one, I have to make use of a hosts file. Do you really think that you can edit your phone's hosts file at all?
How are people accessing your local *htaccess-based* farm then? Only via the IP address? (You could also set up a domain, but you might not want to spend the money?)
Where are you using the wiki? Inside a company network? Then you can use an internal DNS server and make up any domain you want.
The VirtualHost-based setup would only not work if people are accessing your wiki via an IP address. In all other cases you won't need to change any hosts files (because you would use either an external or internal DNS server). Unless you have other reasons for not being able to use that (grumpy admin, cheap hosting, no time/resources, etc).

BTW, regarding different cookies with the .htaccess setup: could someone point me to some documentation? I didn't seem to find any.
Not sure what you're looking for. This might be relevant:
https://www.dokuwiki.org/config:cookiedir. And this might be interesting:
https://www.dokuwiki.org/faq:cookies. Otherwise, there is not much documentation.
