In hindsight my picture is confusing, I should have explained what happened, and how that list was created.
1. The first
Ordered list entry was created by hitting the space bar twice, then adding a "
-", followed by the text.
2. When I hit
Enter a second Ordered list entry was automagically created by the built-in DokuWiki editor. I inserted another space just to show that DokuWiki will treat two, or three spaces, as a list (Ordered, or
*¹) item.
Two spaces is enough to create a list item, three was just an attempt to show how auto list items are created by DokuWiki. Note that automagically the same list style (Ordered) was created. After which I added the text.
a. After adding the text to the Ordered list item I hit
Enter again, and DokuWiki created a third Ordered list item.
I inserted three spaces before the automagically indented "
-" to create a "nested" Ordered list (sub-item). That's a total of six spaces before the "
-". Four spaces would have had exactly the same effect. After adding text to the sub-item hitting
Enter automagically created a new sub-item using the
same amount of spaces as the previous sub-item.
3. I removed a space to convert a sub-item into an item. Removing three spaces would have had the same effect. That was just to show how auto out-denting works. After adding text I hit Enter and another list item was automagically created.
* To turn it into a sub-item I inserted more spaces before the "
-". Inserting two spaces would have been sufficient to achieve the same outcome, notice that DokuWiki ignores the fact that I actually inserted four spaces. I then converted it from an Ordered list item to an UnOrdered list item by changing the "
-" to a
"*".
* I added text to the sub-item then hit
Enter, and DokuWiki automagically created a new UnOrdered list sub-item with the same indentation as the previous sub-item. I removed two spaces, because I can - if I'd inserted two space it would have become a nested, nested sub-item. After adding text and hitting
Enter DokuWiki automagically DokuWiki automagically created a new UnOrdered list sub-item with the same indentation as the previous sub-item.
4. I out-dented the UnOrdered sub-item by removing all but two spaces from in front of the
"*", then converted it into an Ordered list item by changing the
"*" to a "
-". Notice that the numbering continues. I added text and hit
Enter creating another Order list item.
5. And extra space was inserted before the "
-", again, just to show that DokuWiki will ignore anything less than two. I added text. This time instead of hitting Enter which would have created another Ordered list item using an identical number of spaces before the "
-" as the preceding sub-item - I added a WRAP info box
as part of that list item.
This breaks the automagic creation of an identical list item when hitting
Enter. i.e. the new line began in column 1.
6. By inserting the default number of spaces (two), followed by "
-" a new Ordered list entry was created, and because there was no empty lines (or "
\\ ") before it, the
numbering was continued. The same process allows you to add other items (e.g. a code block) to an Ordered list without breaking the numbering.
[sigh] such a convoluted explanation, not like it's
rocket science. :(
