It's a GUI. As with any GUI you can edit the displayed text. So you can
Create the link with the link tool and then edit the link's display text.
Or alternatively:
Type in the short name you need for your link text. Select it with mouse or keyboard. Open the link tool and create your link. The link now has the short display name.
Then I'd call this a feature request.
Googling images for ~"wysiwyg insert link" many if not most of the images have a "Text to Display" field. Expecting user to know to edit the text field before or after creation seems self-defeating. Why not do it in one step?
A perfect example of this is Microsoft Office's create link tool. It pre-populates the "Text to display" if text was selected. If no text was selected, the "address" is copied to the "Text to display" field unless it is changed.
