Sounds good so far. If I put the files in a folder structure on disk, dokuwiki will interpret the folder names as namespaces
Yes. One thing good to know : names for everything, pages, namespace, media, must be lowercase. See
https://www.dokuwiki.org/pagename .
and the wiki will display the the topics grouped this way automatically? Is that how it works?
Not quite. by default, a wiki does not list all the available pages. wether in a namespace or not. Do you expect large wikis such as wikipedia to list all their pages ? If you need a per namespace index, you manually create a
startpage for the namespace. That startpage can, automatically with a special syntax, or manually, list the content of the namespace. Manual listing can be something good, see for example
https://www.dokuwiki.org/development . Many plugins provide some kind of index functionnality, and I think DW itself has one syntax for this too but I just don't remember.
Can the folder structure have any depth?
no depth limit, except what is acceptable for a human beeing.
Regarding tags; are these mainly for searching or is there for example a view where I can see all topics for a certain tag?
I don't know for searching. But if you want to see all topics for a given tag, that's possible. For example, to see all topics that have the "orthographe" tag on Ubuntu French DokuWiki, check
https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/?do=showtag&tag=orthographe.
