frodeaux Yes, it is feasible. See https://www.dokuwiki.org/php_build-in_webserver
I've been using this for some years now on my laptop. I do not observe any of your troubles.
On any DokuWiki, (with php -S
as a server or with a real webserver) it happens that I can't save the settings, from time to time. This is due to my browser autocompleting a field in the config page with a non acceptable value. I have to scroll the config page down to the faulty field outlined in red. If I empty this field, and save the settings, it works. Maybe you're also having this problem ?
I have no idea where the data directory warning could come from...
I just re-checked this install method, and it works (macos and windows). I download and extract latest DW from download.dokuwiki.org, with a standard terminal (ie, no sudo (linux, macos), no "run as administrator" (windows)), cd into the directory where I extracted DokuWiki and run php -S 127.0.0.1:8000 index.php
. Then I visit http://127.0.0.1:8000/install.php and that's it.
