I'm actually fully with you there – with the notion of naming things correctly, I mean :-) It is also one of the reasons I didn't want to call the plugin "Ad-Hoc HTML", because … well … it isn't.
However, the purpose of the plugin is to provide an alternative to the "htmlok" option, while still keeping HTML tags "safe", i.e. with no option to embed JavaScript, or use unsafe tags (like, <object>
, or <iframe>
).
The syntax used here is directly taken from the Wrap plugin, which I believe does a really good job in "wikifying" the tag attributes. It is also a very popular plugin, so it there are probably many users already familiar with this syntax (note, though, that there are many details changed, and the new [attribute=value]
format allows for a lot more flexibility).
So, indeed, it is a syntax plugin that renders certain HTML tags. It does so in a safe way, and with a simple, wikified syntax.
