Perhaps I don't want different indentation levels, but if i did my remark above was a bit hasty and I would find it difficult without divs, not being able to add different classes to paragraphs, lists etc.

Thanks, I've done that and it all looks OK now and hopefully won't break elsewhere. I am now able to add a typography replacement for ~|| and it renders a closing div and new div which I can style to float to the right. This was impossible before because the h1 div would close after my new div thus making it unusable.
I found I could turn off the div.level1 by using html instead. However, an html h1 is enclosed in a paragraph, so again it's far from ideal. But all in all, I like dokuwiki and think I can style it to my liking without too many changes to the original. Cheers!
