Having the exact same problem, freshly installed Dokuwiki with vector template but this happened also with the default template:
The dokuwiki logo is visible, but not any other image I had uploaded. The uploaded image files on the server are fine, so it was apparently not the upload that went wrong. I've also disabled all non-standard plugins, to no avail.
The images are not even visible in the media manager.
So I tried to download one of the images, seeing that the URL was something like:
/wiki/lib/exe/detail.php/playground/logo0.gif?id=playground%3Aplayground
When I opened the supposed image with a texteditor, I saw:
<b>Parse error</b>: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in <b>/is/htdocs/something/www/wiki/lib/exe/fetch.php</b> on line <b>134</b>
Line 134 and following seem to be:
$fp = @fopen($file,"rb");
if($fp){
http_rangeRequest($fp,filesize($file),$mime);
}else{
header("HTTP/1.0 500 Internal Server Error");
print "Could not read $file - bad permissions?";
}
What I am trying to install is a closed wiki (only visible for registered users) but I am using a non-altered Dokuwiki out of the box.
Check gives this:
DokuWiki version: Release 2012-01-25 "Angua"

The data directory seems to be properly protected
The search index seems to be working
BTW:
I also was not successful by changing userewrite to ".htaccess" - admin page was no longer accessible and I had to change the variable $conf['userewrite'] back to 2. Would be nice to have some other option to revert that setting if ".htaccess" failed.
