I suppose I was wondering if there was a downside to using text files rather than a MySQL database or such, either in terms of speed or server space etc.
See
https://www.dokuwiki.org/faq:database to learn more about why using text files can be as good a choice as using a database.

Stats of my wiki:
Stats of other wikis:
*
https://www.dokuwiki.org/devel:scalability is quite old and not very representative, but interesting nonetheless.
* It's not easy to get any stats out of
https://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuinstall, but e.g.
https://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuinstall:southeastern lists 40,000 pages.
* The wiki with the highest amount of pages from the popularity feedback lists *251,657* pages! See
http://update.dokuwiki.org/pop/index.php?key=page_count
* I remember having read about someone who had *millions* of pages in his DokuWiki. Those were automatically generated by a bot and the wiki was still running smoothly. The only thing he had disabled was the search, but otherwise it was a standard installation. Unfortunately I cannot find the link anymore. :(

It's a shame the popularity feedback plugin doesn't have a way to to rank your wiki against the group ( "Your wiki is larger than XX% of other dokuwikis).
Good idea. I just opened a feature request:
