Subject: DokuWiki in the root, exclude some paths
I'd like to have DokuWiki control all of my site, so want to install to root,

except for a couple of apps running in specific subfolders, say /app1 and /app2.

Running Apache with mod_rewrite, want clean URLs without trailing slashes and useslash. Is this do-able? easy/difficult? recommended/not?

If yes, is there an example conf/htaccess, I don't have much Apache foo. . .

Also would need to make sure users can't create matching namespaces.

The default .htaccess should already cope with this as it checks for existing dirs and files first.
