Subject: wiki slowed down after upgrade
Hi there,

we used dokuwiki for a couple of years with a self made template based on mmKanso (using a topbar). Worked fine - and fast!

After our last upgrade "Adora Belle" -> "Frusterick Manners" we noticed that the topbar loads very slowly (one menu item after the other), which it had not done before.

I did think of a couple of possible errors:
- css conflicts
- large topbar (linking to approx. 100 pages)
- old template settings

... but I do not have a clue where to start searching.
I tried to reduce the topbar content, but that did not speed things up - as well as changing the css code.

I would be grateful for some hints.

In times when wiki is not required:
- change to other template (perhaps less comfort for you) and see, if the wiki loads faster. In case of the fault is perhaps related to your template.
- check, whether all plugins are up to date! Deactivate all plugins and see, if the wiki loads faster. Perhaps one plugin not compatible with your template?
- Is that an open wiki? If yes, provide address!

Next coffee, please :-) (07:20 in the morning)

Hey virk,

thanks for your reply. So far I tried
- deactivating dokuwiki plugins
- deactivating safari plugins
- changing the template to the default one
- clearing the cache
but none of the above did any good :-/

What did help was
- reducing the menu items in topbar.txt and clearing the cache
- opening the site in Firefox

What made me wonder
- opening the site in firefox was slow on the first page, but fast on all following pages
- the problem in safari occurred since my last upgrade (dokuwiki + php7 on mac)

I did not deactivate caching of the site, there is no private surfing active - but it looks like safari always reloads the whole topbar.txt and puts it all together again and again after each click on the menu ...

Is it an open/public wiki?

No, it's a private wiki running in our intranet.

I do not know what to do :-)

I looked in our wiki, where I write down all problems we ever had. One case perhaps fits a little bit to yours: Finally I solved that by correcting the permissions of the complete dokuwiki-folder. I do not know which file was causing the problems, but I notice that at some of our files and directories the permissions were wrong. This was (perhaps) caused by a backup-programme, which did not respect the permissions somehow (I do not remember all the details). So I finally set files and directories to _www and everything went well again.
Did you already append "?do=check to your wiki-call in the browserline. Maybe that gives a hint?

Hey virk,

thanks for your reply again. I tried changing the file permissions, as well as activating and deactivating the debugging mode and some other config options, but again that did not help. The check returned green answers, so no problem there either.
I also thought about reducing the number of links in the topbar, but it works fine in firefox. Returns the menu immediately. I think I will just wait for the next Safari update and hope that it's a problem related to Safari+ topbar + php7 :-)

Okay! I have no further idea :-) We also use dokuwiki with Safari and do not have "these kind of problems". You could try to download "Safari Technical Preview"; maybe that future Safari-version works better :-)

P.S.: Try to delete all caches, history, etc. of Safari and then try again. I remember one problem with Safari which could be solved by this.
Show "Developer menu" in Safari/Preferences/most right tab. This menu will be shown in menu and simplifies the procedure of deleting caches etc.
Additionally try to open a "new private window" and check, whether the fault disappears in this new window.
Additionally try to open Safari with a new user; maybe that helps.

If anything of the above is successful, continue investigating. Have fun :-)

I think I got it - we use some images in the topbar. So far, we did not encounter any problems with it, but after the last upgrade we also included some 30 menu items with different icons. Looks like this slowed our wiki down (building the navigation). When I delete the icons from the topbar, everything seems to work fine again.

... just in case anybody encounters the same problem :-)
