When I write an article that has three external links, I can save it OK. When I try to add a fourth, the web server returns a 'page not found' error page and the edit is not saved. If I drop out to the file system and add the link in the text file by editing it directly, the article will display and function perfectly well -but I can never edit it again, for every edit (even to correct a comma!) causes the 'page not found' error.
Is there somewhere that the number of external links is limited, so that I can re-configure it?
Or is there a known bug/issue related to this sort of behaviour, just so I can get to know more about what triggers it?
I'm using version 2013-05-10a, on a shared host.

No, can't second this. We have dozens of external links on several pages.
Are there security mods enabled in your webserver?
Any entries in your webservers log file?

I've just got one of those providers that give you a cpanel thing. I wouldn't know where to go to find such logs. I did take a look at the 'raw access logs' item, and saw various 404s at the times I'd sort of expect to see them, but nothing that really explains what's going on.
I couldn't replicate the problem when I quickly built a local VM and put an older version of DokuWiki on it, either. So it's probably down to the fact that I am not in complete control over what's happening on my host. That, and the fact that I've already got Wordpress installed on that server anyway.
I'll keep puzzling away at it, anyway. I didn't think it would be a bug or anything, but it's good to know. It's just odd that it's entirely repeatable: 3 links fine, 4 links...404. Every time. Maybe time for a new host...
Thanks anyway.

Just wanted to say that I set up Dokuwiki on a new VPS host. And, out of the box, the number of links in an article ceased to be a problem. So I guess there was indeed something being set by the other shared hosting vendor that was screwing me up. Anyway, thanks for all the advice. Everything is working nicely now!
