I added mime.local.conf containing a line 'mp4 video/mp4' but I still get the message

Upload denied. This file extension is forbidden!

What is wrong?

Reload / touch config file ?

Is mp4 the exact name of the file extension ? If other it will not work.

Yes, it's .mp4 in lower case and touching config files didn't help.

Try adding more mp4 mime types like audio/mp4, video/m4v , video/mpeg

It is server dependend, so IIS can have others than Apache.
Search for server specific configuration

Can your server play mp4 ?
I mean are there codecs installed ?
If not install a codec pack so the server can recognize the mime type from the data stream.

I'm running Apache/2.4.7 (Ubuntu) locally on ubuntu 12.04

Clicking the mp4 video in nautilus starts Totem Movie Player and plays the video.

I am not familiar with Apache.
But i think the webserver is not configured to recognize the mime type .

Try adding using a more general mime type :

mp4 video/mpeg

Also ad the mime types to be allowed in your webservers directory.

My mime.local.conf now contains:

mp4 video/mp4
mp4 audio/mp4
mp4 video/m4v
mp4 video/mpeg

Touching config and retrying: same problem.

As stated in my previous posts : the problem is not in dokuwiki but in your apache config.
In Windows this is quite simple , install a codec , it is added to the registry and the type is then known by IIS.

You have to allow the extensions to the webserver.
As far as i remember from some 15 years back , you have to configure the right mime types in apache.

Remember: the issue ist not downloading mp4 from the server to the browser, but uploading to DW.

According to my apache2 mime.conf mime types are defined in /etc/mime.types.
Strange: /etc/mime.types still contains a line

video/mp4 mp4

So apache should know about mp4.

I just tried it on my Synology NAS.
It has Apache 2.2 / php 5.3.22 / Binky
(Apache + PHP are factory set)

At first it gave the same error : not allowed.

Then i changed mime.conf and added : mp4 video/mp4

The file is uploaded !

i tried with 17 mb and 108 mb, both were uploaded.
I didnt play back.

The only reason that message can appear is if a mimetype is missing from mime.conf[/m] and [m]mime.local.conf. Please ignore everything Rene said (except touching config), a potentially wrong server configuration cannot be the cause of this issue.

Everything you did seems to be correct (adding that line into mime.local.conf[/m]), so I'm not sure what could be wrong. Are you sure you added [m]mime.local.conf[/m] into the correct folder? Are you using a farm or did you change your config cascade in any other way (i.e. are you using [m]inc/preload.php)? In that case, the file would need to go wherever else you have it configured.

Yes, it was the most stupid error... Found by negative testing: disabled mime type pdf and tried to upload a pdf-file...
