I asked this because I upgraded an installation of Dokuwiki from Lemming to Hrun for a client who runs an office with ancient versions of Windows, and while they can still use IE for shares, they will have to adapt when their OSes are upgraded. Current versions of Windows and IE have similar restrictions as those found Firefox and Chrome. The client's default browser is Chrome, and Chrome makes it fairly simple to access a Windows share, and I made this quick video how-to:

Because IE no longer directly supports shares out-of-the-box, this page is now out of date, There is no simple way to access shares in IE. I found a few items dealing with IE; I haven't bothered searching further:
