I started looking into this and I must admit it sounds a little confusing for now. I am not yet familiar with the terminology and the concepts. But I like to learn :)
There is however some aspect that seems limiting in my situation. We access our wiki through the fixed IP of the server (Synology) so basically:
http://xxx.xxx.xx.xx/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start
We don't have a domain name or anything. AFAIU virtual horstnames require to play around with DNS in some way.
I guess there is no way for me to make for instance ourwiki.com (or any other URL, including IP-based ones) redirecting traffic to either
http://xxx.xxx.xx.xx/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start (server1) or
http://yyy.yyy.yy.yy/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start (server1, whenever server1 is down) globally (for everyone on the web) and without paying some fee to someone. I mean that's what domain names are made for, right?
Now by googling "free domain name" I found that there
might be some free options out there (I still need to examine this)...
EDIT: no... nothing free... sometimes free for a year but that's it...
I see there are .wiki URLs. That would be great!
Please just let me know if I am going in the wrong direction and if I missed something obvious.
Thank you very much in advance for your help and advice.
Best,
