augustine Hi there, Everything was woking fine with my wiki on Siteground's shared servers until a month ago, when I started experiencing automatic log outs. Siteground tech support has looked into the problem and referred me to here for help with finding the solution to the issue. Making changes to the .htaccess file in the root folder temporarily (up to several hours) allows me admin access. I have an cloned version of the wiki which is functioning normally. The issue only presents on the live site. Error logs show many "client denied by server configuration" entries. I have tried several htaccess configurations, disabling all plugins (except the manditory ones) and adding ... "authplain" to the local config file. Any help with this would be most appreciated!
turnermm The client denied is normal. See, for instance, https://forum.dokuwiki.org/post/48021. Making changes to the .htaccess file in the root folder temporarily (up to several hours) allows me admin access. What does this mean -- just the mere act of making a change or making specific changes, and if the latter which?
augustine Hi Turnermm, Thank you for your response and linking me to the information about the errors being normal. Regarding your question, it seems to be any change. I can rename the .htaccess file or delete it or modify it and regain admin/edit functionality for a period. A similar trick can be done with the plugins folder. I can rename it, try to access the wiki, have it fail, wait 10 minutes, then rename the folder back to plugins and voila, I can log in again (for a period). I have to wait at least 10 minutes for this to work, however the .htaccess tick works immediately. What is most perplexing is that the cloned version of the wiki works fine until I made that version 'live'. The logout problem appeard again quickly.
turnermm Disabling the .htaccess in any way might have an effect on Dokuwiki, depending what's in the .htaccess. But what happens if you simply add a brief comment at the top of the file, like #my .htaccess
turnermm The point about the comment is that it has no effect. So that if the next time this happens it is solved by adding a comment to .htaccess, then it is definitely a problem of the server, not of Dokuwiki.
augustine Hi Myron, I have found that making small changes such as renaming the htaccess file (then returning the original name) etc enabled me to log into the admin of my wiki. I have been able to access the wiki for the last 30 hours, so I am reluctant to change anything at the moment. If/when the problem arises again, I will let you know what adding the comment does. Thanks so much again!
