sfitcs There have been a number of questions in the past about how to display custom favicons, and there is no information about the correct format. Could someone with write access please rectify that? The correct location for favicon.ico is $DokuWiki/lib/tpl/$YourTheme/images/favicon.ico If you have problems getting the new favicon to show in the browser, load the favicon in the browser and refresh the page. If your custom favicon will not show when you add your DokuWiki to the browser search (OpenSearch format) you have the wrong favicon settings. Browsers are not fussy about the images in the favicon, the Search Bar is (I'm not certain that's the fault of the browser). To have a favicon show in the Search Bar it:- ;must be in the correct directory ;contain a 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 pixel 8-bit PNG images. Any other size PNGs or bit-depths used to create the favicon will not show in the Search Bar because the resulting xml code will contain a base64 image string which is converted to 76 character columns with the last character missing, instead of a single line with no characters missing. I don't know of any tools for Mac or Windows that will do that, though they probably exist. For Linux use icotool (from icoutils) and 8-bit images e.g. icotool -c 16x16.png 32x32.png 48x48.png -o favicon.ico The same applies to online favicon creators.
klap-in I think this topic fits well in the tips namespace instead of the FAQ namespace. See: https://www.dokuwiki.org/tips These tip pages are completely open for editing as well, thanks!

When using the dokuwiki template you can also simply upload a favicon.ico file to the wiki namespace. Which is mentioned here: https://www.dokuwiki.org/template:dokuwiki#changing_the_logo
sfitcs Hi Andi, thanks for taking the time to respond. I agree, it depends... on the template being used, and, of other factors (I've, slowly, been working on understanding, proving my "understanding", and documenting them all*¹). So far I've found that there are a number of different opinions - which mostly seem correct even though they differ - my solution, so far, is to use favicon.ico in a number of locations. There are a number of locations a favicon.ico file can be placed and be used as a tab icon - or bookmark icon, by the browser. Different browsers (and different themes used by those browsers) use different sized images from within the favicon.ico files - regardless of the location the favicon.ico. To complicate things, the favicon.ico is also used for things other than displaying a browser tab icon: as an icon for bookmarks; an icon for OpenSearch; and an icon used by social media sites when the website is linked to a post. If only one favicon.ico is used on a DokuWiki website it seems that all four things are not possible. And I haven't ruled out the possibility that favicon.ico images aren't used elsewhere (still testing phones and pads). I'm over-simplifying as the image sizes/formats used in the favicon.ico/s is also a factor in how optimally an image from a favicon.ico file is for a given usage; whether a favicon.ico file will even be used (e.g. a large hi-colour image may be well suited for some browser themes, but will not be suitable for an OpenSearch icon). *¹ at this point I only intend to test with the default DokuWiki theme.
