I have read the DokuWiki syntax page. I understand what can be done. I have just finished configuring my personal wiki and am now considering finding some plugins. I found three plugins right away that caught my eye:
- Tag Plugin
- CKGEdit Plugin
- EditTable Plugin
As a long time Firefox user, I understand how a person can get used to the benefits a plugin provides. But plugins eventually stop being developed. Rarely does this break my ability to browse the internet though. Since DokuWiki plugins usually involve custom syntax, it makes sense that if a plugin stops being supported, that all of the pages that utilized it will now have to be edited to remove the unsupported plugin syntax.
Questions
1) Am I correct in believing that once a plugin is gone, that the plugin syntax will show up as normal ASCII on the pages that used it? Example: If I had to uninstall TagPlugin, then
{{tag>- }} would now be visible in any page that used it.
2) For those of you who use plugins regularly, do you run into this situation very often? Where you are left needing to edit a lot of pages to clean up syntax or reformat text, as a direct result of no longer using a plugin?
3) I can see how these problems are manageable in a small personal wiki, but I will be adding content to mine on a near daily basis. I worry that if I get in the habit of using certain functionality/syntax, but lose it at a later date, that the time investment to "clean up" pages could be more trouble than it's worth. For all the potential problems that can come from using plugins and later losing them to non-development, do you still feel it is worth the potential set backs?
Any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! :-D
