I just copied the lines from wiki:syntax that explain how ordered lists should work.
- The same list but ordered
- Another item
- Just use indention for deeper levels
- That's it
try as I may, it only shows unordered (*) lists to the viewer. I tried it with and without the two spaces at the beginning. this must be a simple error on my part. could someone please enlighten me?

I just copied your "lines" into a (new) dokuwiki-page and it worked as intended:
1. The same list but ordered
2. Another item
a. Just use indention for deeper levels
3. That's it
Perhaps you have some plugin or template, which interferes somehow?

I am going to guess that you are correct. (A student installed the dokuwiki for me.) apologies for the bother then.

Do strictly what I have done, too: Copy the four lines into a new page and then check!
Explanation: If you are new to dokuwiki you perhaps make mistakes concerning the syntax: Perhaps you open with "**" for to write in bold and do not close with "**". There are many of these mistakes which can be made.
If your wiki is an open one, post the link and I can have a look. It is just Christmas here and I do not need to work :-)

One further remark: If you f.e. prepend a line with just two spaces to the given four lines, it will not work as intended: dokuwiki interprets the two spaces as the begin of code, which will be displayed into a grey field without being formatted.
