using "head pages" rather than start pages

DokuWiki already supports using pages named like the namespace as start page. I don't think there's anything you need to do what you want. Just don't create start pages. See https://www.dokuwiki.org/namespaces#namespace_default_link…

One thing to consider is that if you want the head/start pages to have the same sidebar as the rest of the pages in that namespace it will need to reside in the namespace with the other pages.

For example, if you have a namespace for products, a page named :products (in the root namespace) will show the root sidebar at :sidebar but a page at products:start will show the sidebar at products:sidebar, which will match the other pages in products:
