Just wanted to announce yet another hack to allow rowspans in tables. You can see the docs I wrote
here. My objective was to make sure my additions did not invalidate existing tables and to support top, center and bottom v-alignment.
Basically, you put the cell content in the cell's topmost row. Then in the ghost cells in the subsequent rows, you would type /\| (or /-\| or /_\|) to indicate that this cell is attached to some cell above it. The cell is top aligned by default. Using /-\| or /_\| results in middle or bottom alignment respectively. The | can be replaced with a ^ to make header spans.
Bidirectional spans also work so the following table is 3x3 with the lower 2x2 area being one big cell.
| a1 | a2 | a3 |
| b1 | b2-c3 ||
| c1 | /\||
While mistakes in your coding can cause some funny looking tables, I wasn't able to produce any hard errors using these mods so I'm hoping someone else will use it to find any bugs I didn't.
Enjoy.
