Really sorry for asking something so dumb but ......
I can preview a new page but it doesn't appear to save, although I'm getting revision history but they are not viewable. If I manually create a page I can see it but I'm not able to edit it
I know it's something dumb but I'm not getting any errors to point me in the right directions

My strongest guess is that the file permission are wrong, have you double checked them?

AFAIK there are correct, if I create the file on the filesystem and set the permissions then I can edit the pages without any problems. I think the 'problem' is with the monobook template cos if I use the default it appears to work OK.
So bottom line still stuck, but got a work around

I had this problem since moving to a new server, and was finally able to figure it out. To be sure the causes might have been different, since you were able to work around it with a template change.
My problem was that the owner of the data/pages folders was myself, not the server. The files from the old server had been moved to my new server, and had never been created by the DokuWiki process on the new server. Since DokuWiki hadn't made and didn't own the necessary folders, it couldn't write to the data/pages folder with the usual permissions.
Once I figured this out I set the permissions of the subfolders under /data to 777, and after that creating new pages went great. Similarly, I had to CHMOD the moved-over pages to 666. I still kept the folder and file creation permissions to 755 and 644, though, since any new folders and files that DokuWiki creates in the new server will be owned by DokuWiki and therefore writable.
Hope that helps anyone else who comes across this problem, particularly after a server change.
