I want to enable RSS updates for pages on our wiki. When I initially subscribed to a namespace through RSS, I could not get any updates.
My searching revealed a few threads that suggested passing the username and password in the feed URL. This, of course, works fine. However, I've configured the wiki to authenticate against our local Active Directory, and I would not feel comfortable asking people to embed their domain usernames and passwords into the RSS feed URLs.
Additionally, this makes it more complicated when it comes telling people how to subscribe. Adding extra parameters to the URL (for namespaces and such) will be well beyond most of the users capabilities. So for simplicity's sake, I want to create a link an the top of each new namespace that will allow them to subscribe to it. But if they embed their own username/password that will negate the point of having a link for them to click.
So...I see no other way around this issue then creating a read only account that can read the whole site, and then embedding its username and password into the URL of all of my auto RSS links that my users will use. Not the most secure way to go, since if anyone got this, they could read the whole thing, but I think it might be a bit better then just opening up the whole thing to everyone, or passing AD credentials along the URL.
Anyone have any opinions or suggestions about this?
Thanks,
Thomas
