Subject: tips:redirect_farm - still broken after one day of hard work
While trying to set up my own wiki farm,
I reorganized the farming guide into an entry page [tips:farm] and an installation guide [tips:redirect_farm],
I reorganized the latter to provide a test after each single installation step,
I simplified the procedure by concentrating on the .htaccess method
(all text about VirtualHost setup is preserved; it is just moved to the Advanced Configuration section),
I almost thought everything worked out nicely -

but it's still broken.
I get an animal wiki start page,
but as soon as I try to login, I am back to the farmer wiki.
In the HTML source code of the wiki page, all links
go back to '/farmer' instead of '/barn/cow'.

Are you using the redirect (or virtual host) method for some special reason?  A symlink setup is simpler if all you want to do is create a single Dokuwiki engine for all of your wikis.

If you are using a linux system, and are unfamiliar with midnight commander, I would suggest installing it.  It's a text-based file browser that you use in the terminal and does all kinds of things, like creating symlnks, changing permissions, creating directories, traversing the directory structure of a tarball or zip file, etc. . . .  It will make organizing your farm visually accessible.

On a debian/ubuntu system, you invoke it as
sudo mc
This will give you permission to act as root for all of the mc commands.

Subject: problem possibly solved
Inserting
  $conf['basedir'] = '/barn/cow';
in local.protected.php seems to solve the issue.

Why I am preferring redirect over symlink? Good question.
My needs are:
- Run a number of wikis with minimal duplication of administrative work;
- the farmer shall have full control over the corporate design template;
- animal wiki admins shall have the right to register new users, to set
  page permissions, to create namespaces;
- otherwise they shall have as little rights as possible.

I was curious about the farm setup and created a test farm for myself.  I found that
$conf['basedir'] = '/barn/cow';
was needed as well.

Could you update http://www.dokuwiki.org/tips:redirect_farm?

Done: It's in Step 5, conf/local.protected.php.

I've updated the tips page and added some code to addanimal.sh which automatically sets the basedir option.    I am attaching it here.
