no promises or timeline, but one of our real developers is planning on an auto link plug in that should suit your needs. Wish I had more for you, but... hopefully you haven't given up..
If your developer should need any ideas how to implement the plugin feel free to contact me, I wrote down some ideas when somebody asked about autolink in the IRC channel two days ago as I thought it would be a useful feature, below you can find a short version. I also thought about implementing it myself but I fear that I won't find the necessary time anytime soon.
I had a short look at the code and the discussion on the plugin pages, imho they have both one main problem: They work directly on the wiki source, one dynamically when the page is rendered and the other when the settings are saved. The dynamic approach has the problem that it breaks section editing and I think also most things that rely on instructions being correct and both approaches have the problem that they also modify code sections, text that is marked as not being wiki markup, ...
I think a proper autolink plugin should contain a syntax plugin that takes the configured expressions (regular expressions or simple words) and either registers them separately or also directly combines them into one regular expression. The handler could then check which expression was matched and add an internal link instruction with the matched word as name and the configured target page (possibly with replaced parts from the match) as link target.
