Subject: altering metadata for specific pages?

I've been experimenting with meta-tags in dokuwiki. Tried the plugin:meta, which is experimental - and didn't work all that well.

After a bit of searching I found that all the metadata was stored in meta/pagename.meta. It even contained a description tag
with an 'abstract'. This abstract however, is not found anywhere in the xhtml generated. How does the spider
get access to this info?

I'm trying to optimize/clean up these tags so that what comes out after a spidering actually looks nice.
