michaelsy Why do I need Obsidian when I have DokuWiki? (I am half serious about this question.)
I'm a big fan of DokuWiki since 2016 with ~ 10 farm animals (with NAS synchronization and free custom domains to implement public sites), and thousands of notes and blog posts. I cannot say that I have explored all possibilities of DokuWiki, but it's indeed part of my life. What makes me feel like trying Obsidian recently, is mainly:
- Speed:
realtime autosaving (you'll need git-related plugins for automated/manual version tracking on the other hand though, which DokuWiki has in core),
and nice "WYSIWYG+code" edit mode (like Notion) (which is not yet found in DokuWiki)
- Visual graph of connections of pages
Of course Obsidian is yet expanding its plugin inventory, and DokuWiki still provides the full, complete and versatile experiences ready to use both personally + publicly, which Obsidian will need some community 3rd-party plugins to catch up with.
I'm not thinking of substituting DokuWik with Obsidian, because it's very improbable to migrate my assets of years. But the possibility of "using DW+Ob together" (like share sets of pages between DW+Ob) will definitely be better than having to use them "separately" (for different purposes and non-sharable page bases).
